Sweet Bobby: The Podcast That No One's Supposed to Speak About

Have you heard of Sweet Bobby? You must have. Because this audio thriller is probably the most shocking catfishing story you’ve ever heard.

The story that spans a jaw-dropping 10 years

Detailing one of the most elaborate social media crimes that will shock you every step of the way. The investigation is STILL being looked into today… and is only now being taken seriously due to public outrage that the main culprit… still resides in London, living a high profile life with the ability to ruin and manipulate lives all over again.

The ‘Catfishing’ hoax that destroyed lives…

Catfishing is not considered a crime in the UK. But with social media now being such a huge part of our day-to-day lives, it wasn’t surprising that this podcast hit close to home with so many listeners. The docu-series was shocking, devastating and heartbreaking. Leaving listeners furious and baffled that such an elaborate catfishing hoax was even humanly possible.

Why social media is to blame

Facebook was founded in 2003, rising to popularity in late 2009. Back then, you’d assume that not only were people using the platform both innocently and naively, but that no one except Mark Zuckerberg had the technological awareness to be able to manipulate the platform to such extremes. And while many young readers today may think that growing a relationship over social media is normal, we still have to acknowledge that in the hands of a sociopath, social media is a lethal weapon.

The power of people

Without giving away spoilers (because you must listen to this podcast) the case would have never amounted to anything if it weren’t so readily available on our iPhones. The case was only picked up thanks to a team of journalists that were willing to share the story on Spotify this winter. And now, people are demanding that the victims of the Sweet Bobby crime are finally granted justice. After years of dismissal from police saying the matter was ‘too complicated’ or a ‘simple family affair’, UK listeners have given the case enough traction through word of mouth that justice may finally be on the horizon.

In fact, the most satisfactory part of all of this, is that the high-flying tycoon who started it all may no longer be able to hide behind high-profile lawyers and protective family members. The power of the public is now officially above the law when it comes to doing what’s right.

Can we stop Catfishing for good?

As of 2017 Facebook began testing a new feature in India to stop catfishing for good. The tool was intended to give users more say over who can download and share their profile pictures. With additional plans to begin using A.I. (artificial intelligence) to crack down on catfishing content.

It hasn’t yet to be revealed how much progress the feature has actually made. But even recent publications like Monday nights ‘The Instagram Effect’ addressed the millions of fake accounts that currently exist in Zuckerberg's Metaverse. Many of which are impossible to keep track of...

Summary

In 2021 there were over 19.1 million podcast listeners in the UK. And with its increasing popularity, it’s no wonder that podcasting is taking the world by storm. Sweet Bobby is one of the first of many podcasts that might just spur a movement where social podcasting becomes a primary platform for sharing insightful media information.
